I have always has a fondess for Lotus Esprits. This is an 1988 model. Peter Stevens redesigned the esprit which debuted in 1987 also known as Project X180. These cars are turbo charged and produce 215 bhp and 220 lb-ft which gave it a 0-60 time of 5.6 seconds. Not bad for a 4 cylinder engine in the 1980s. It also had a stop speed of 150 mph.
The 1989 Esprit was improved again with GM multi-port , electronic fuel injection and the addition of a new water to air intercooler which Lotus called the Chargecooler. This raised performance to 264 hp with 280 available on overboost. The 1989 cars had a 0-60 time of 47 seconds with a stop speed raised to 160 mph. These cars also received side skirt and new air ducts in the front air dam. You may remember this model as the Esprit SE which was also in the movie Pretty Woman.
This is alot of performance for the money. I think these cars are only going up on the appreciation scale. It is difficult to get much lower than sub 20k for a high performance car like this. They may never reach E30 M3 prices but they are definitely a bargain.
I dont know many repair shops that specialize in Lotus Esprit anymore but I think the parts are out there and a home mechanic should be able to handle the majoritt of the repair work.
This car looks like its been driven and used. Its not a bad thing but the seller says a small fortune was spent recently to get the car back up to spec. Take a closer look at the repairs and do a proper inspection. It looks to be a nice car that should be used the way it was intended.
