The derivation “250” came from the capacity of each cylinder in cubic centimeters, CCs multiplied by 12 this became the know as the Ferrari 3 liter that powered the line from the 50’s up until the mid 60’s. Vehicles such as the Tour de France Berlinettas, Short Wheel base Berlinetta, California Spyder and the world famous Ferrari 250 GTO, are among their less feared Lusso Belinettas and 2 Plus 2s.
This engine is one of these factory produced, old stock engines believed to be from one of the 250 GT Lusso Berlinettas of 1963-64. It is believed that Lusso chassis number 4373GT or 4377GT (engine type 168 U) were the source of this block, and the front cover and other parts came from a standard 128 type engine. The 128 F would be a 250 GT Cabriolet Series Two engine or some derivation close to that.
This particular example has had it’s chassis/engine number polished off from it’s usual location on the right side rear platform. But below this stamped in the normal location is it’s internal number of 1056E. The internal number of 1056E was traced to one of these two Berlinettas.
V-12 Engine number 1056E was to be used as back up motors for a SWB, California Spyder and or a Tour de France Berlinetta. It appears that the raised boss where the original serial number was positioned has been shaved off by maybe 1 or more millimeters. It is not unusual to have the block replaced with an alternative, with the front cover, pan and other bits swapped out. and the front cover .
The condition of this V12, “1056E” is unknown, but a bore scope indicates that there appears to be no damage. For a serious purchaser, with an agreeable deposit, the engine can be torn down for inspection. Donny Brooke also will rebuild “1056” for a reasonable fee to what ever state of performance the end user wishes to end up with.
