1957 Porsche Speedster Sold for $605,000 at Hilton Head Island
Auctions America 11/6/2016

The Auction estimate was between $200,000 and $250,000 but the final bid reached $605,000 US Dollars!

This car has been considered in almost near perfect condition. It is truly a time capsule. It has been stored in a suburb of Chicago since 1975. There is minor rust around the battery box which is one of the first places to find rust.

It was purchased in May of 1957 and racked up 25,000 miles form 1957 to 1975. The original owner passed away 5 years ago and a family friend purchased the car from the estate. The car has the original paperwork.

Aquamarine Blue Metallic Paint

US Spec bumpers and headlights

Optional coupe seats in place of the lightweight speedster seats

Original Owner’s manual , spare tire, and jack included

This speedster was found 4 hours from Chicago in Hoopeston, Illinois. It was purchased in Shakesspare Motors. The original owner John Casper gave a $50 deposit on May 31, 1957. There is a document showing the sticker price of $3,502 US Dollars for the Speedster. There is also documentation of John returning on June 6th , 1957 to pay the remaining balance of the car. John loved his speedster and was found to attend many Porsche Club of America events. What an incredible story!

I saw one of these in dark blue sell less than a year ago for $79,000. The prices seem to have climbed to $100k since then. This one is discounted due to the higher miles. I still think its worth it due to the rarity of the America Roaster. Only 250 were made for the US markets from 1992 to 1993. Its a good looking car and should hold its value very well.

The Porsche 944S2 is worth mentioning. It is not a low production car by most Porsche production numbers. There were 3,650 made in 3 years for the US Markets, but only 449 delivered in 1990. Porsche 911 pricing has gone through the roof and are out of reach for many enthusiasts these days. I think people are starting to discover the Porsche 944 and 944 Turbo cars as well as the 928 models for their performance and value. They are a lot of bang for the buck. Porsche introduced these cars in 1989 and they made 208hp from a normally aspirated dual overhead cam 16 valve 3.0 Liter version of the 944 engine. It was the largest production 3.0 Liter 4 cylinder engine of its time.

I personally love 356A coupes and convertibles.  They are amazing and nostalgic all at the same time.   I am always a fan of anyone brave enough to take on a car restoration ike this.   It requires alot of time  and deep pockets to do it right.  I love seeing cars that are documented from Day 1 to the first drive.  Its very exciting to see.   This car is worth saving but this car requires almost too much work.  Do you agree?

I am not so sure you could restore this without being upside down financially.   There are so few 356A cars left that it is the Porsche enthusiast’s obligation in life to restore them.  I know there are people who would love to turn this into a 356A Speedster.    Blasphemy?

This is a fiberglass Beck Spyder that has been taken to another level. The builder really did their homework to build this car to get as close as possible to the actual car. They did a very good job. Instead of using a speedster windshield , the builder put on a frameless lexan windshield like the original car. It has the proper looking pea shooter exhaust pipe. The alloy wheels are custom to this car. Not exactly correct but still good looking. I like the attention to detail on the front and rear signal lights. The interior looks well done as well. The steering wheels , turn signal stalk , switches all look great. I like the overall attention to detail. The badging looks correct as well.

I have always loved Porsch 356s. They are really something special. Since selling my 356A 20 years ago , I still want to find it and buy it back. The is a serious restoration project. the only thing going for it is its a numbers matching car. Must do some research before buying this car. In its given condition, the price seems high considering the amount of restoration work needed. Rust is extensive and would scare of alot of potential buyers. The engine needs to be rebuilt then paint and interior. Its a massive project for anyone to tackle.
