1984 Mercedes 500SEL Convertible Caruna Conversion
Spotted in New York is a 1984 Mercedes Convertible Caruna Conversion. This is a convertible conversion on a 4 door sedan was done in Switzerland by a company called Caruna. They were possibly the best known for these four door conversions on the W126 S Class Body. Caruna did a conversion on the SE body which is shorter with a higher boot as well as the 500 SEL body. This is the longer wheel base version and was thought to be a more beautiful design. Unlike the other conversion companies, these cars had a rear glass window that folded neatly in the trunk. The early cars were fitted with 2 separate seats in the rear instead of a bench seat. This was done to prevent the weight of 5 persons to damage the car’s integrity. A complete car in 1984 was 166,000 Swiss Francs ( $173,000 USD) and increased from there based on options.
